[From our own Correspondent.] On Saturday last Mr. Saltmarsh expired, after a very protracted ilness. Deceased was one of our oldest inhabitants, and on Monday, the body was followed to the grave by nearly a hundred and fifty respectable people. Mr. Benjamin, Jun., came from Perth (to attend the ceremony), and put up his horse at the stables of Mr. John Saltmarsh. The horse had not been there more than a few minutes before it suddenly dropped down dead. On opening the body of the horse, it was found that the animal had ruptured one of the larger vessels of the heart.3

The following date of birth has also been recorded for him : circa 1810. This date of birth is given in the baptism register (age at baptism).
John Quin (son of Timothy Quin and Rachael Wright) was born circa May 1819 at Patersons Plains, Van Diemens Land. In the November 1820 Port Dalrymple muster John Quinn was listed under Children of Convicts, 18 months, off the stores. In a letter from Timothy Quinn to Governor Arthur in April 1830, he claimed that his 'children had been born on the land that he had lost' at Pattersons Plains.1,2 John Quin was baptised on Sunday, 25 February 1827. Joannes (John) Quinn registered in 1827. 17 years, sponsored by Bartholomew Smith. The register suggestes that this baptism may have taken place in Hobart, but as the register covers all of Van Diemens Land, this may not necessarily be the case. One other entry four above this in the register is marked 'Launceston'. Also, other entries are marked 'illegitimate'. Timothy and Rachel do not appear to have been married. Did they convince the Catholic Church otherwise? There is no record of John Quinn coming to Port Dalrymple with either of his parents in 1812. The age of 17 must be wrong. If they met in Sydney just after Rachael arrived, John could only have been born in about July 1812. See 1820 muster entry which gives his age as 1.5 years, ie born circa May 1819.
